Keep Writing

This is my last post for Write Anything. I’m grateful for the existence of this site for various reasons. Firstly, like many others I cut my short-story-writing teeth here, using the Fiction Friday prompt. It was an enjoyable challenge to produce a piece of writing every week and one for which I’ll always be grateful. It was also Write Anything that brought me my first chance of getting my work... read more

On Failure

At the beginning of the year each author on this site were given the task of setting themselves a writing goal for the year. I welcomed this as the shot in the arm I needed. Maybe, it would help me focus my writing. Perhaps, it would pull me out of the lethargy which had installed itself. So with all my new-found enthusiasm, I set myself the goal of tackling the novel I had had in my mind and sometimes... read more

A Hard Skin

The past six weeks have been difficult ones for me. Health problems, struggling to cope with changing situations at home. In and out of hospital for various treatments. All things I’d rather have done without. Yet, I know, or at least I sincerely hope, that it’s all for my benefit, that when everything is said and done, I’ll come out of it healthier. There’s a parallel here to... read more

My Writer’s Bookshelf

Sitting in front of me on my desk is a small resizeable bookshelf. It, and the books it contains, are within an arm’s reach. I don’t have to get up and go into the passageway or my living room to find the book I want. So as you can imagine, it contains those books which I consult regularly. They form a mix of different categories but three themes dominate: teaching (English); spirituality and... read more

Heroes

These are just a few things that have been on my “to do” list over the summer. Each of these tasks required care and attention to detail as well as a certain amount of subject-specific knowledge. But the actual technique of correcting and keeping hold of the corrections was oh-so-simple… thanks to this machine on my desk called a computer... read more

It May Be Full But It’s Not Stop

My daughter is 20. At 18 she sat her baccalaureate exams, passed with flying colours and was able to put a full stop to the passage of life she’d called the lycĂ©e. How strange it would have been, had she placed that full stop, sat back, folded her arms and decided life was over. That would have really worried us as parents. Instead, she started on the next step of her adventurous voyage through our... read more

Do You Know Your Words

Words! What would we do without them? As human being we use them everyday. They form the most basic element of communication. A student of English, for example, may not know much about sentence structure but if he/she comes into the room carrying a tray and says “eat good”, the chances are you’ll reach out and try whatever is on offer. Afterwards, you may try to teach the correct way to... read more

On Obstacles, New Opportunities and Hopes

By the time you get to read this post I’ll be in the middle of my holidays and hopefully… That’s just another way of saying that progress has been sporadic at best. Two reasons stand out. The first—dealing with the question of my narrative voice—I dealt with in last month’s post, so I won’t go further into that here. Suffice to say that I’m still... read more
