Post Scriptum – October 2011

And I’m back. That was a short month (though in reality it has been closer to two–the joys of pre-posting!). I’ve settled into the life of a teacher. My students have just completed their first assessable coursework. And I have a stack of marking to do. What better way to distract myself than by returning to Write Anything? Today is Hallowe’en, a day that used to be one of my... read more

The Writer In The Dark

I will scare the hell out of you. After all, it’s what we really want, isn’t it? My first novel was a psychological-suspense thriller called Night Terrors. One of the reasons I gravitated toward this category of fiction was the absolute thrill of writing to terrify you. I craved the structure and strategy of writing a story that kept you on the edge of your seat during the entire read. I felt... read more

The Dark Side

I’m writing my post this month really late, like way behind schedule. I could come up with lots of excuses for being so late, work, family life, a cat that’s been back and forth to the vets over the last few weeks, but really there’s only one reason… Writing just isn’t doing it for me at the moment. I’ve tried to think positively about my novel, I even started to edit... read more

Area 51

In a library where I once worked there was a shelf behind the desk, far up on the wall. This shelf housed an assortment of books including Mein Kampf, American Psycho, and an anime book with a title I forget. This shelf was called Area 51. Area 51 tried to be an overlap between the real world and an ideal library. In an ideal library we’d stock all the books useful for our collection, books people wanted... read more

The Dark Side of Poetry: Suffering for your art

They say you have to suffer for your art. There seem to be at least three components to this belief– but before I get into analyzing them, let me point out that there is no evidence that suffering, or that suffering artists, create better art. And no, let’s not get into what makes art “good,” let alone “great…” Anyway. Thought #1: Suffering makes the artist better.... read more
